Drug Addiction
Drug addiction is defined as the compulsion to take and use drugs without regard to the negative consequences that the use of drugs causes. The cycle of drug addiction also includes drug craving, drug seeking and physical and psychological dependence on drugs.
Currently drug addiction affects over 20 million Americans, many of whom have experienced negative consequences as a result of their addictions.
Those with substance abuse issues take drugs regularly and experience unpleasant symptoms when they stop taking drugs. The unpleasant symptoms that a person experiences when they stop taking the drug are known as withdrawal symptoms. Withdrawal can vary but will negatively affect the addicted person both mentally and physically.
Mental withdrawal symptoms from drug addiction can include feelings like depression, sadness anxiety and even paranoia. Physical withdrawal symptoms can include headaches, nausea, vomiting, tiredness, weakness and many others depending on what drugs the person is addicted to.
