Helping Individuals Overcome Addiction

Earlier this year a program moved into the area to help individuals overcome alcohol and drug addiction as well as prevent our kids from starting to use drugs.

The organization is called the Narconon® Drug Rehabilitation and Education Program and it has been highly acclaimed and supported by Hawaiian-born actress Kelly Preston, who also rid herself of drug problems using the techniques of the program.

The program was founded by a former heroin addict in Arizona State Prison named William Benitez on February 19, 1966.  NARCONON literally means NARCotics ? NONe, and has a very unique and successful drug-free approach to rehabilitating drug addicts.

Today, the Narconon program has spread from that one program in Arizona State Prison to include community programs in many states and countries such as Denmark, Italy, Holland, Germany, France, Sweden, Spain, Canada, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Colombia, Switzerland, New Zealand, South Africa, Ghana, the United Kingdom, Australia, Indonesia, Taiwan, Argentina and Brazil.

The Narconon program has from the beginning been founded on key principles developed by author and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard. The keynote is that an individual is responsible for his own condition and that anyone can improve his condition if he is given a workable way to do so. It is based on improved understanding of his fundamental nature: that man is basically good and it is pain, suffering, and loss that lead him astray.

In the early \60s, Mr. Hubbard was one of the first to see the long-term consequences of the accelerating drug culture. He responded warmly to William Benitez\'s request for help with his fledgling Narconon program in Arizona State Prison and continued to write up his observations on the effects of drugs on the individual person, his body, and the society as a whole.

The Narconon program from its inception promoted an approach to rehabilitation without recourse to alternative drugs. This early program did not, however, deal directly with withdrawal symptoms and difficulties. In 1973, after Mr. Hubbard had conducted further research to aid Narconon staff to help others through the difficulties of withdrawal discomfort safely and with minimal discomfort, the Narconon program adopted these procedures to include drug-free withdrawal, using vitamins and mineral supplements along with special techniques to ease the mental and physical symptoms.

Another truly pioneering innovation researched by Mr. Hubbard was adopted in 1978 known as the Narconon® New Life Detoxification Program. This tissue-cleansing regimen of specific vitamin/mineral therapy with cardiovascular exercise, intensive sweating in low heat saunas, adequate replacement of fluids and oils, has become immensely valuable for reducing the long-term physical and mental effects of drug residuals on people who have taken drugs.

Mr. Hubbard noted the scientific evidence behind the accumulation of drug and other toxic residuals in the human body. He postulated the influence that these psychoactive toxins might have subliminally and overtly on the mind and person and developed a safe, healthy, and thorough method of cleansing the human body of the actual drug residuals.

With this Narconon® New Life Detoxification Program, students regularly report a remarkable increase in clarity of thinking, peace of mind, and well being. It also greatly reduces or eliminates cravings for drugs that stem from hidden drug toxins.

More than three decades of scientific studies and follow-up have validated the theory and practice of this remarkable procedure. L. Ron Hubbard\'s innovations to the Narconon program continued through the years, always designed to facilitate a stable, drug-free life for individuals.

While Mr. Hubbard devoted much of his life to humanitarian efforts, he was also a professional in many fields.  Among other things, he was a decorated Naval Officer and Master Mariner, a stunt pilot, a police officer with the LAPD, a musician, photographer, filmmaker and of course a best-selling author.  His administrative and organizational developments have aided thousands of businesses to expand and prosper as well.

He also discovered fundamental barriers to studying and their remedies in education, which has helped millions of people around the globe increase their learning abilities in their chosen field of study.

In view of a decadent society lacking morals, in 1981 Mr. Hubbard wrote and released a non-religious moral that can be applied by anyone called The Way to Happiness.  This common sense guide to living is also included as part of the Narconon® Drug Rehabilitation and Education Program.

Thousands of local, state, national and international awards, recognitions and proclamations have been presented in honor of L. Ron Hubbard's humanitarian efforts and the programs that have formed because of them.

Narconon International is located in Los Angeles and they are the managing body over all of the independent Narconon Centers worldwide.  On their website (www.narconon.org) there is a message from the President of Narconon International Mr. Clark R.N. Carr and it reads, "...allow me personally to invite you to visit a Narconon center.

Come and talk to our students. Talk to their parents and families. Talk to probation officers and judges who have referred offenders to the Narconon program. You may have questions. If so, I would be glad to answer any inquiries directed to Narconon International via phone, fax, e-mail, or mail. I look forward to hearing from you and hope that we can share our work, combine our resources, and duplicate our results with you and your colleagues."

Chairman of the Board of Narconon Hawaii Myron Thompson, Jr. also sends his invitation, having said, "I urge the people of Hawaii to find out about Narconon first hand, and you be the judge."

Drug and Alcohol Rehab Center – Success Story
I have just completed the Narconon Arrowhead Drug and Alcohol Rehab program! It’s been a long and sometimes difficult path, but many things worth having in life are not easy. This has taught me how to be myself again. I developed and learned the skills needed not only to be a good son and parent to my kids but to live without the need to get high. That is the greatest thing I could every hope for. B.W.
