Labor Day Drinking Sparks Impaired Driving Crackdown by Law EnforcementThe National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced another year of the nationwide campaign against drinking and driving called You Drink & Drive. You Lose. The program started in 1999 and combines $14 million in public service ads with highly visible law enforcement.NHTSA studies show that nearly 97 percent of Americans view drinking and driving by others as a threat to their families and themselves. Indeed, Americans support tougher enforcement and rank drunk driving ahead of healthcare, poverty, the environment and gun control as an important social issue. This time of year on the road is particularly dangerous, as approximately fifty percent of fatalities in motor vehicle crashes that occur during Labor Day weekend are alcohol-related. Overall, the Administration estimates that 17,400 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes last year alone. Combining efforts to curb alcohol consumption and dangerous behavior, Narconon Arrowhead, one of the nation's largest and most successful drug and alcohol education and rehabilitation programs, teams with the NHTSA to offer these reminders: ? Be responsible and don't risk it ? you will be caught. ? Report impaired drivers to law enforcement. ? Always buckle up ? it's your best defense against an impaired driver. ? Get help for friends or family members that have a drug or alcohol problem. It is important to keep our loved ones and ourselves safe during the upcoming holiday weekend and throughout the year. We can also help take responsibility for others as well and help make a better community for all. |
