Club drugs have been increasingly popular drugs that are used by adolescents and young adults at dance clubs, bars, and all night parties called “raves.” These drugs are extremely dangerous and, when used in combination with alcohol, can even be deadly.

One of the main club drugs include MDMA or Ecstasy which is a psychoactive or mind-altering drug with hallucinogenic and amphetamine like properties. But Ecstasy can also contain opiate and depressant like properties as it is a synthetic drug and no two batches of the drug are alike.

Other popular club drugs are GHB, or Gamma-hydroxbutyric acid, which is a drug that causes relaxation in users and was originally used by body-builders to stimulate muscle growth; Rohypnol which is also known as the “date rape” drug because it has been known to cause those to take it to experience long periods of unconsciousness and black outs; and Ketamine which is a tranquilizer that also causes users to hallucinate.

Another very dangerous club drug is a drug called LSD which is one of the major drugs making up the hallucinogen class of drugs. Hallucinogens cause hallucinations—profound distortions in a person’s perception of reality. Under the influence of hallucinogens, people see images, hear sounds, and feel sensations that seem real but do not exist. LSD is a hallucinogen that produces rapid, intense emotional swings and it’s effects on an individual are often unpredictable.

Because some club drugs are colorless, tasteless, and odorless, they can be added unknowingly to beverages by individuals who want to intoxicate or sedate others. In recent years, there has been an increase in reports of club drugs used to commit sexual assaults.
