MDMA (Ecstacy) Use

MDMA (Ecstacy) Use

MDMA (Ecstacy) use gained popularity among adolescents and young adults in the nightclub scene or weekend-long dance parties known as raves.

However, recently the profile of the typical MDMA (Ecstacy) user has been changing. Community-level data from NIDA\s Community Epidemiology Workgroup (CEWG), reported in June 2003, indicate that MDMA (Ecstacy) use has spread beyond the rave and nightclub scene to a variety of urban, suburban and rural areas throughout the country, including greater use on college campuses. For example, reports from Chicago suggest that Ecstasy, or drugs sold as Ecstasy, are widely available among high school and college students.

MDMA (Ecstacy) use has also increased among different ethnic groups. For example, reports from Texas indicate use spreading beyond predominantly white youth to a broader range of ethnic groups. In Chicago, where a single MDMA (Ecstacy) pill can be purchased for about $12 to $15, the drug continues to be predominantly used by white youth, but there are increasing reports of its use by African American adults in their twenties and thirties. Also indicators in New York suggest that both the distribution and use of club drugs are becoming more common in non-White communities.

MDMA (Ecstacy) has also become a more popular drug among urban gay males. Reports have shown that some gay and bisexual men take MDMA and other club-drugs in myriad venues. This is concerning given that the use of club drugs has been linked to high-risk sexual behaviors that may lead to HIV or other sexually transmitted diseases. Many gay males in big cities report MDMA (Ecstacy) use as part of a multiple-drug experience that includes marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine, ketamine, and other legal and illegal substances.

Success Story from Narconon Arrowhead's Drug Abuse Treatment Center
I came to Narconon Arrowhead's Drug Abuse Treatment Center when I realized I could not stop using cocaine. I had thought previously I could stop. I was a successful businesswoman. I had purchased a half million dollar home and had always paid off all of my credit card bills in full. That was before I became addicted to cocaine. During my yearlong cocaine binge, I maxed my credit cards and was making it to work later and later. I also could barely pay my mortgage at the end of the year. When I made the choice that I needed help, it was because I knew I was going to start smoking cocaine. I didn’t choose to come to drug rehab because I was losing everything. I couldn’t even focus on that. All I could think about was cocaine. I arrived at Narconon Arrowhead in April. It has helped me realize so many things about myself that I don’t think I would have if I was somewhere else, like another drug rehab where they give you one drug to help you get off another. I can’t wait to see the new me six months from now. I am already amazed at the new me after two weeks. N.F.
