Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD)

LSD or Lysergic acid diethylamide is a very addictive and damaging hallucinogen. LSD usually is added to absorbent paper and divided into small squares, often with pictures or decorations on them. LSD is also sold in tablets, liquid form and in gel capsules. Those taking LSD usually inject the drug by taking it orally.

Historically LSD was first synthesized in 1938 in Switzerland by a chemist who was conducting research on the drug to use in the medical and psychiatric field. The drug made it to America and was later labeled a Schedule I substance meaning that LSD has a high potential for abuse and no medical use.

The effects of LSD can last around 8-12 hours and usually the drug takes effect 30 to 90 minutes after the individual takes it. Some short term effects of the drug include increased body temperature, blood pressure and heart rate, loss of appetite, jaw clenching, perspiration, pupil dilation, dry mouth, tremors, and insomnia. The user will also experience hallucinations and sensations such as seeing different colors and hearing sounds.

LSD also impairs the ability of the user to understand common dangers and make sensible judgments and can cause the user to become more susceptible to accidents and injuries.

Once a person stops taking LSD they often experience flashbacks of certain aspects of their LSD experience that recur after they have stopped taking the drug. LSD users may also experience long-lasting psychoses, such as schizophrenia or severe depression.

Those taking LSD are very likely to develop tolerance to the drug, meaning that they must consume progressively larger doses of the drug in order to continue to experience the hallucinogenic effects that they seek.
