New York receives grant designated to helping prevent drug abuse In January of 2009 the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) announced the winners of its substance abuse prevention grant competition. Nonprofit groups in Appalachia designed projects addressing substance abuse issues and a total of $296,800 was awarded amongst the nine winners. In New York the grant was given to the Steuben County Department of Community Services in order to help overcome service gaps in addiction assessments and treatments for incarcerated persons. ARC Federal Co-Chair Anne B. Pope stated: “At ARC we are committed not only to understanding the economic development problems facing the Region; we are also committed to doing something about them. Those problems include substance abuse, which can sap the quality of the Region’s labor force. These grants are an important step in assisting communities in improving their intervention and service programs dealing with illegal drugs and prescription drug abuse.” Drug abuse prevention programs are needed in every state in the nation in today’s world. There are thousands of persons who are addicted to drugs and alcohol and being addicted causes more problems than it is worth. Most addicts can’t function as normal members of society. They can’t make rational decisions, hold jobs, pay their bills, be responsible for others and numerous other things. When you are addicted the only thing that matters in your life is getting high, everything else comes second. These are just some of the reasons we need to continue to fight against drug abuse. The economy of today is struggling but if we look closely we could see that it’s not just because there are no jobs to be done. Thanks to grants from companies like ARC and others there is funding available to help those in need. As drug addiction continues to grow in the U.S so does the power we have to educate. By educating people with the truth concerning drugs and alcohol we are allowing them to make their own choice. Once they know the truth they make healthy decisions for themselves and that continues on for generations. Keeping our nation free from addiction should be on the top of everyone’s to do list.
