Heroin Addicts Sacrifice Fifteen Years of Life to Their Addictions

A study of the life expectancy of male heroin addicts in California found that heroin addicts typically lose a decade and a half to their addiction. The study, executed at the University of California at Los Angeles, followed a group of addicts for more than 33 years to calculate their average life expectancy and compare it to a similar group of unaddicted males.

The average age of the addicted group was 27 years and the study found that their average life expectancy was 18.84 years. A similar group of unaddicted males had a life expectancy of 33.48 years, meaning that the addicts lose nearly 15 years of life, on average. The cause of the loss is the addiction itself and the accompanying health-compromising lifestyle that goes along with it.

“The dangers of heroin addiction are a nightmare for the addict’s family,” said Derry Hallmark, Director of Admissions and Certified Chemical Dependency Counselor at Narconon Arrowhead. Narconon Arrowhead is one of the country’s leading drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers, located in Canadian, Oklahoma. “They constantly worry about overdoses, diseases connected with intravenous injections, or the person being exposed to violence or accidents. Helping a person escape the trap of addiction and leave all these dangers behind is what Narconon Arrowhead does, day after day.”

“We have found that families play such a large role in an addict’s recovery,” added Mr. Hallmark. “We encourage families to take action this holiday season by openly addressing the situation, telling the addicted person how much they care and that they want to help him or her through recovery. No one wants to be addicted, no matter what they say.”

Narconon Arrowhead can help a family locate the help they are looking for. Not only do they provide drug and alcohol rehabilitation and education, they also do free assessments and referrals for families all over the country. There will never be a better time to save yourself or someone you care about from substance abuse.
