Consider these facts: More than 20 million people use an illicit drug each month. More than 5.5 million people used cocaine last year. More than 11 million people have abused prescription drugs in the last year. And more than 54 million people engaged in binge drinking in the last month. These figures are all according to reports from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration from 2005.
Consider also the costs: In this country, more than $181 billion is spent each year on handling the effects of drug abuse. The National Institute on Drug abuse estimated that some forms of treatment of substance abuse save twelve times as much as they cost. Successful drug abuse treatment can reduce costs resulting from health issues such as HIV infections and hepatitis, and can prevent judicial system and incarceration costs of those arrested on drug charges.
Addiction and substance abuse are involved in nearly every type of social ill we face. Child and domestic abuse, unemployment, spiraling medical costs, crime – all these issues and more are aggravated by substance abuse.
In 2006, more than 20 million people in the U.S. needed treatment for substance abuse but were not able to find that care. This problem creates a huge drain on the federal and state budgets that could be reallocated to education, homeland security, recreation, urban renewal, medical education or care or other social project, if the addiction problem could be whipped.
Addiction is not overcome for very many people in twenty-eight days. Most people in month-long programs do not have a chance to rebuild a life that has been destroyed by drugs or alcohol. The Narconon drug and alcohol rehabilitation program works with an individual as long as it takes to help them recover a fully functional and drug-free life. The program begins with holistic methods of eliminating cravings which are followed by a thorough educational and counseling program that helps addicts learn the life skills they need to live drug-free.
In celebration of National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month in September, find out how addiction can be eliminated for good with the Narconon program.
