Sadly, the abuse potential for prescription drugs is so varied that a wide variety of people seeking altered states can find them in these drugs. Adolescents, college students and young adults in particular are prone to prescription drug abuse. Men tend to abuse stimulants such as Ritalin, women are more likely to abuse opioid painkillers and anti-anxiety medications.
Whereas methadone was once reserved as a treatment for heroin addiction that would keep torturous withdrawal symptoms at bay, it has in the last several years become a broadly prescribed painkiller and a common drug of abuse. Between 1999 and 2005, methadone contributed to an increasing number of deaths. By 2005, deaths had risen to more than 4,000, nearly five times what they were in 1999. In many cases, methadone was combined in alcohol or a sedative such as Xanax that form a dangerous combination.
“The bottom line is that any time a person abuses a street drug, a prescription drug or alcohol, they risk addiction and they may even risk overdose death,” stated Derry Hallmark, Director of Admissions and Certified Chemical Dependency Counselor. Narconon Arrowhead is one of the country’s leading drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers in Canadian, Oklahoma. “The best way to protect life and health is to refuse to abuse drugs and alcohol and if you can’t stop, find a rehabilitation program with a good success rate.”
“At Narconon, our graduates find drug-free success seventy percent of the time,” Mr. Hallmark continued. “Our program features a sauna component that flushes out the residues that drugs and alcohol leave behind in the fatty tissues. After elimination of these residues, our graduates find that their cravings are greatly reduced and this helps them stay free from drugs and alcohol in the future.”
