Further questions in the survey also showed that of those who had cleaned themselves up, only 13% admitted to committing any crimes. Among those being treated with methadone, 91% admitted to committing crimes.
Scottish government officials called the methadone treatment program into question, citing the annual £12 million bill for the service. One of those officials stated that “Methadone, which was meant to be a bridge (to sobriety), is no such thing.”
In America, one study from 2000 found that four out of five addicts being treated with methadone who quit their treatment will relapse within three years. Proponents of the methadone programs say that this is a reason to keep people under methadone treatment indefinitely. If methadone were the only option to save a person from heroin addiction, it might be a good idea, but evidence shows that it is not.
The holistic, long-term, residential program at Narconon Arrowhead has a much better record of success than methadone. “Our surveys show that seven out of ten of our graduates are still clean two years after graduation,” stated Derry Hallmark, Director of Admissions and Certified Chemical Dependency Counselor at Narconon Arrowhead. Narconon Arrowhead is one of the country’s leading drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers, located in Canadian, Oklahoma. “We use a detoxification program that employs dry-heat sauna, exercise, vitamin and mineral supplements to help eliminate the cravings. After this, a person learns new life skills that cause guilt and depression to be left far behind and that enables them to build a new drug-free life.”
