A study of reports from the Drug Enforcement Agency and other agencies tell this tale. Read the statistics on drug seizures at the Texas border. More than a million pounds of marijuana were seized by the Texas DEA offices in 2007. How much more made it through the Ports of Entry? How much was flown in or came in by boat or entered through a different border state?
One story from BBC News from July 2008 reports on a homemade submarine that was seized in Mexican waters carrying 13,000 pounds of cocaine that had departed from Colombia. Seizures of metric tons of marijuana are reported so frequently as to be commonplace. Three tons seized just across the border from Texas in June, another ton seized in August 2008 not far from McAllen, Texas, more than two tons seized in Nogales, Arizona in April.
In September 2008, officials in four countries arrested 175 people and seized 40 tons of illicit drugs. Those arrested were part of the Gulf Cartel, responsible for moving multi-ton quantities of cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana from Central and South America into the United States.
Even a cursory examination of information available from the Drug Enforcement shows that the citizens of twenty different countries consider America to be the marketplace for the drugs they grow, manufacture, ship or sell.
Trafficking drugs into America is big business, in the billions of dollars per year. As long as the demand is there, it will be supplied. The answers are plenty of education of our young people and effective treatment of those who become trapped in addiction.
“No one starting to use drugs intends to become an addict,” stated Derry Hallmark, the Director of Admissions and a Certified Chemical Dependency Counselor at Narconon Arrowhead. Narconon is one of the country’s leading drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers, located in Canadian, Oklahoma. “They are just seeking a solution to a problem or stresses in life, on the job or in school. Drugs or alcohol seem to solve this problem for a little while so they may reach for this solution again and again until finally, they are physically and mentally addicted. The only way out of this situation for many people is an effective rehabilitation program.”
Mr. Hallmark offered the services of Narconon Arrowhead to anyone who is looking for a solution to substance abuse or addiction. “Not only do we offer drug rehabilitation and education services, we also counsel families who don’t know where to turn and refer them to the kind of addiction service they may be seeking. That help can be lifesaving for the addict or for others around him if it comes as soon as the addiction is discovered.”
