Prescription drug addiction continues to affect several million Americans who suffer through its’ negative affects, which include drug seeking, cravings, and severe physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms. The most common types of drugs that lead to prescription drug addiction include opiods, central nervous system depressants and stimulants. Opiods are most commonly prescribed to control pain and examples of these drugs include Oxy Contin, Perocet, and morphine. Central nervous system depressants are usually prescribed to treat sleeping disorders and include drugs such as Valium and Xanax. And, stimulants are usually prescribed for those with obesity, or for someone who is diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and some examples include Adderall or Ritalin. Most prescription drug addiction starts as a result of being legally prescribed the drugs listed above and others for an illness or injury. The result is that many end up addicted to prescription drugs and start to obtain them illegally or end up hooked on other drugs as a result of prescription drug addiction.
