Methamphetamine abuse continues to be a drug of choice in our nation, but specifically it has risen in the state of Oklahoma as 2009 statistics show deaths due to meth use almost doubled compared to 2008.

NewsOK.com reports, “The number of methamphetamine labs has increased by more than 500 in the past three years.  In 2009, there were 743 labs discovered.” 

“The number of deaths from methamphetamine overdoses has also climbed.  In the first nine months of 2009, the Oklahoma Medical Examiner’s Officer reported 51 deaths from methamphetamine overdoses, Narcotics Bureau figures show.”

The article continues to discuss the strict laws passed by the State of Oklahoma in 2004, that was set to limit access of pseudoephedrine, a common ingredient of methamphetamine, but due to new methods to create meth, use of this drug continues to rise.  According to Woodward, Director of the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs Control, the two new methods to create meth are “one pot” and “shake and bake.”  These methods requires much less equipment to make and “…labs are often contained in a single 20-ounce soda bottle.”

The State of Oklahoma’s law enforcement agencies have started training state employees on the signs of the “one pot” meth labs and coming soon, the Senate is expected to create a bill that will contain a registry banning meth offenders the ability to buy over-the-counter pseudoephedrine.  Willingham left this remark, “this is a problem that’s honestly not being seen in a lot of places.  Until that happens we’ll [Oklahoma] will be known as the meth capital of the world.”

Until laws regulate the ability to purchase pseudoephedrine and law officials are fully prepared to tackle this rising problem in the State of Oklahoma, there is currently a workable solution that can aid with this ever-growing problem.
