Approximately 13,000 (2.51%) reported past year illicit drug dependence.With this constant threat of drugs being imported from out of country, it is no wonder why Alaska is in great need of effective drug treatment.

Being surrounded mostly by oceans, Alaska is in prime position for drug traffic. With this optimal location, Alaska has a constant threat of drugs being shipped in from out of state. .This is where most of Alaska’s drug abuse problem spawns from. Drug trafficking organizations bring the cocaine in from the lower 48 states and are able to sell it at a greatly inflated price. Cocaine trafficking is controlled primarily by Mexican and Dominican trafficking groups. The cocaine is then used to make “crack” which is extremely addictive and poses as a great threat to Alaska. Almost half of drug charges in Alaska are related to cocaine. The abuse and trafficking of oxycodone, hydrocodone and anabolic steroids continues to be a concern in Alaska. Heroin is also shipped into Alaska by various trafficking organizations. Drug trafficking organizations in Alaska also engage in money laundering by using various methods to legitimize and relocate illegal earnings and money. A majority of which comes from the contiguous united states. Though methamphetamine lab seizures are down, methamphetamine imported into Alaska continues to be available. Marijuana is the most widely used and abused drug in Alaska. A majority of the marijuana in Alaska is grown indoors. Results of a state wide survey of Alaska high school students indicate that approximately 45% reported trying marijuana at least once in their lifetime. Alaska also has one of the highest percentages of alcoholic addiction in the country. This means that people’s lives are being affected everyday by alcohol related driving accidents. Many characteristics of the Alaskan climate and location promote drug abuse. People are stuck inside, isolated from the rest of the community. The temperature is usually extremely cold, and the sunrise and sunset has unusual pattern. With all of these climate characteristics, the people of Alaska have an unusual temptation to use drugs and alcohol. Depression and suicide are also common in Alaska.

With the ever increasing drug abuse, Alaska is in dire need of effective drug rehab. Drug treatment and education is the only way the illicit drug problem will get better in Alaska.
