If effective drug treatment is not used for the individual abusing drugs in Delaware, the drug addiction problem will only spread.

Although a small state, Delaware has a rather significant drug problem.  With its location close to the major cities, Philadelphia, Boston, and New York City, this state is in consistent threat of being targeted by drug trafficking organizations.  Heroin, powder cocaine, crack cocaine, and marijuana are the most readily available and most popular drugs in Delaware, but most any drug is available, especially in the summer months, when club drugs, such as meth and ecstasy are more prominent. Both the powder and crack forms of cocaine remain increasingly available and popular in Delaware.

Philadelphia and New York City remain the primary source areas of cocaine distributed in Delaware. The popularity and use of crack continues to increase in popularity, due to its wide availability and relative ease of use. Distributors tend to travel to Philadelphia or New York to purchase the cocaine, then return to Idaho and cook it into crack. Heroin is primarily available in northern Delaware. The increasing availability of cheaper, higher purity heroin over the last few years has caused concern in Delaware over a growing heroin use problem that reaches all socioeconomic backgrounds. Distributors of heroin are moving from larger cities like Philadelphia and New York City to smaller cities in Delaware in order to escape the attention of police and other law enforcement. Marijuana is readily available in varying quantities in Delaware, such that it is easily obtained and used by individuals from a variety of ethnic populations and socioeconomic sectors.

Methamphetamine is generally available in limited quantities in Delaware. However, according to recent investigations, it is readily available to those who visit the Rehoboth Beach area during the summer months. Ecstasy is primarily available at rave parties and nightclubs in Wilmington and Rehoboth Beach, particularly during the summer.

Approximately 20,000 (2.83%) Delaware citizens reported needing but not receiving treatment for illicit drug use within the past year. Drug rehab is needed for so many individuals in the Delaware area.
