MARIJUANA USE IS NOT ONLY AN EPIDEMIC FOR IDAHO, BUT A NATIONAL ONE AS WELL

Marijuana (pot, herb, weed, boom, mary jane, gangster, etc.) has been at the top of the list as the most commonly abused drugs in almost every state of the nation including Idaho, according to recent and past Drug Enforcement Agency reports and studies. In 2006, each and every day, 3,577 youth from 12 to 17 years old used marijuana for the first time, according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. This equates to over 1.3 million teenagers a year beginning the use of marijuana alone! This figure doesn't even take into account other age groups or other substances. Let's take a closer look at what this marijuana use can and does create in terms of effects on the user as well as families.

HOW MARIJUANA USE EFFECTS THOSE ABUSING IT, AND IS CREATING A REAL NEED FOR EFFECTIVE DRUG REHAB AND ADDICTION TREATMENT IN IDAHO

marijuana_drug_rehab_joint.jpgAll form of marijuana use creates mind-altering effects. THC (delta-9tetrahydrocannabinol, the active ingredient in marijuana, determines the potency and effect of the drug. The vast majority of marijuana being distributed in the U.S. is either from Mexico or Canada, both of which are showing significantly increased levels of THC over years gone by. Canadian (BC Bud) especially has much increased potency. It is also appearing in cigar wrappers called blunts, where it is often combined with other drugs such a crack cocaine.

THC is a toxin that affects the brain and nervous system, causes a rapid burn up of vitamins and minerals in the body, and raises heart rate (sometimes doubling it). THC is lypophilic, meaning the chemical is fat-bonding and gets stored inside a persons body for weeks, months, and even years after use has ceased. Among the more common short and long term effects are:
  • Increased risk of heart disease and illness (Following first hour of smoking pot heart attack risk is 4 times greater than normal for the individual)
  • Lowered immune response due to vitamin and mineral burn up resulting in an increased susceptibility to illness and disease
  • Increased cancer risk ( Marijuana smoke contains 50 to 70 percent more carcinogens than does tobacco smoke)
  • Lethargy and lack of energy and motivation
  • Reduced motor skills and nervous system reaction times
  • Hallucinations and delusions
  • Depersonalization (loss of sense of personal identity)
  • Increased tolerance leading to ADDICTION (more on this later in the page)

IDAHO STUDIES SHOW NEED AND DEMAND FOR MARIJUANA DRUG REHAB TREATMENT

Recent National Studies on Drug Use and Health, from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, an arm of the U.S Department of Health and Human Services, offers the following figures on Marijuana for Idaho

IDAHO

(Numbers are individuals and have been rounded to the nearest thousand)

AGES 12-17

AGES 18-25

AGES 26 OR OLDER

TOTALS

The same study gives a breakdown showing treatment admissions for marijuana/hashish in Idaho for 2005 to be 354 individuals.

As we can see marijuana is NOT the innocent drug it is often made out to be, and with more and more potent varieties appearing on the scene the need for effective drug rehab and addiction treatment is a real and growing concern.

HOPE AND HELP FOR MARIJUANA ABUSE AND ADDICTION IN IDAHO

A drug is addicting if it causes compulsive, often uncontrollable drug craving, seeking, and use, even in the face of negative health and social consequences. Marijuana meets this criterion. Marijuana's addictive potential has been a controversy and point of debate for decades, but the simplicity of the above statement should put any debate to rest.

According to Clark Carr, President of Narconon International, "Given the failure of many traditional drug treatment methods to produce sufficient long-term results, many governments have come to the conclusion that if addiction is an incurable 'disease' then it would be better to legalize and distribute drugs than to incarcerate stop_marijuana_addiction_drug_rehab.jpgaddicts. There have been various levels of experimentation with this in Holland, England, Switzerland, Australia and Canada. The fact is that the harmful affects of drugs can be reversed with an effective protocol."

Executive Director of Narconon Arrowhead Gary W. Smith reports, "Although the number of people coming to us who are abusing pot is a smaller percentage of our total clientele, in the 30 years I have been in the drug rehabilitation field I have not seen these numbers of individuals literally hooked on marijuana and unable to stop on their own."

Drug Treatment Centers – Success Story
During my five months here, I have grown to love and care about myself again. I handled some emotional issues that I previously refused to see. I believe doing this drug rehab program has really handled a whole bunch of problems I have been creating for myself for years. The drug addiction stemmed from these problems, so I’m good to go now. I feel whole again and ready to live again. Thank you so much for everything. L.D.
