Drug Rehab Iowa

Iowa\s need for drug rehab:  With the increasing trends in drug abuse in Iowa, during 2002, there were 37 adult arrests for murder in Iowa that were drug-related.  To follow, gang and drug activity was the circumstance given in 20% of the Iowa murders in 2002.  There were 9,723 adult arrests for drug offenses and 1,945 adult arrests for drug paraphernalia violations in Iowa during 2002.  During 2002, there were 9,892 drug possession and drug use offenses reported by law enforcement in Iowa. In 1998, there were 8,324 such offenses.  During 2001, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) reported making 410 arrests for drug violations.  Since drug and alcohol addiction is the leading cause of crime in Iowa, there is a great need for drug rehab programs.

Iowa\'s need for cocaine addiction treatment:  According to the DEA, cocaine continues to be readily available throughout Iowa.  Purity levels for cocaine decreased from 84% in 1998 to 74% during 2002.  Prices for cocaine in Iowa increased from $100 during 1995 to $150 during 2003.  Cocaine is available in Iowa is transported from the West Coast via commercial airlines, motor vehicles, and mail services.  Suppliers from Chicago, Illinois, also supply cocaine to eastern Iowa.  Mexican polydrug traffickers transport cocaine into the state mixed with shipments with marijuana and methamphetamine.  Street gangs control cocaine distribution in the urban areas of Iowa and their presence has increased gang-related violence.  According to the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse, 1.38% of the total popluation in Iowa has used cocaine at least once in the past year of the survey and 4.23% of the population that use cocaine are the ages of 18-25.  The DNE seized a total amount of 51,153 grams of cocaine in 2003.  As cocaine abuse continues to rise in Iowa, the need for cocaine addiction treatment will increase.

Iowa\'s need for methamphetamine drug rehab:  Methamphetamine is the primary drug of concern in Iowa.  During the 1990\'s, methamphetamine replaced cocaine as the drug of choice for many of Iowa\'s illicit drug users.  Methamphetamine prices have decreased from $120 during 1995 to $100 during 2001.  Purity levels of methamphetamine in Iowa have decreased from 90% in 1995 to 16% during 2002.  By the end of state fiscal year 2003, 4,605 locks were installed in Iowa to prevent the theft of anhydrous ammonia from agricultural nurse tanks.  Even though 73% of teens in Iowa says using methamphetamine one time per week has a great risk, 3% of the teen population continues to use methamphetamine.  Hispanic organizations transport most of the methamphetamine in the state via motor vehicles, commercial airlines, and mail delivery services.  Large mexican communities in Iowa provide an infrastructure to import and distribute the methamphetamine.  Small local toxic laboratories continue to be a significant problem throughout the state.  Most of the laboratories produce only ounce quantites at a time.  Eastern Iowa reports an increasing problem with the laboratories, causing law enforcement agencies to expand a large number of man-hours on the problem.  In 2003, Federal agencies seized a total of 153,856 grams of methamphetamine with a total value of $5,426,697.  Methamphetamine drug rehab programs are a necessity as the trend of methamphetamine abuse continues to rise over the entire population in Iowa.

Iowa\'s need for marijuana addiction treatment:  Marijuana is readily available throught eastern and northwestern Iowa, and is usually available in combination with cocaine and/or methamphetamine.  Domestically produced marijuana is available in Iowa and small indoor and outdoor grow operations have been found in eastern and central Iowa.  The marjority of the marijuana available in Iowa is imported from the wouthwest border via commercial airlines, motor vehicles, and mail delivery services.  "Ditchweed" marijuana, which is used as a filler for higher purity imported marijuana, is a continuing problem and marijuana addiction treatment is in demand throughout the entire state of Iowa.  The National Household Survey on Drug Abuse reports that 46.42% of Iowa citizens ages 12 and older felt that smoking marijuana once a month posed a great risk, 3.49% of Iowa citizens ages 12 and older have used marijuana within the last month.  The age range of 18-25 has the highest percentage of citizens who abuses marijuana at 11.57%.  1% of Iowa 6th graders reported using marijuana in the past month along with 5% of 8th graders and 15% of 11th graders currently abuse marijuana.  In 2003, Federal agencies seized 2,400 pounds of marijuana, 41,390 marijuana plants with a combined total value of $23,095,563.

Iowa\'s need for club drug rehab:  The abuse of club drugs, such as MDMA (Ecstasy) and GHB, is increasing in Iowa.  MDMA is encountered at rave parties in eastern and central Iowa.  The state crime lab has reported an increase in the number of MDMA exhibits being processed.  As MSMA abuse rises amongst Iowa\'s teens, there is a need for club drug rehab programs.

Iowa\'s need for prescription drug addiction treatment:  The prescription drugs that are abused in Iowa are Vicodin, Lortab, propoxyphene, alprazolam, hydrocodone, Ultram, diazepam, hycodan, Demerol, Dilaudid, and Percodan.  These prescription drugs are more prevelant in eastern and central Iowa.  Prescription drugs are diverted trhough fraudulent prescriptions, doctor shopping, pharmacy break-ins, and hospital thefts.  OxyContin abuse is on the rise in Iowa and prescription drug addition treatment is needed.
