Marijuana transported into Michigan from the Southwest Border is primarily distributed by Mexican and inner-city trafficking organizations. Approximately 35% of Michigan high school students surveyed reported using marijuana at least once in their lifetimes. Marijuana abuse is ever increasing. Heroin is widely available throughout the Detroit area and the more densely populated areas of Michigan. Heroin destined for Michigan continues to originate from different parts of the world such as South America, Mexico and Africa. Oxycodone demand is increasing throughout the state and the abuse and diversion of hydrocodone and methadone are also increasing throughout the state. As local economies fail, many of the individuals addicted to the Oxycodone are turning to the more affordable heroin. Although meth has not been a primary concern, there has been a noticeable increase in the production and abuse in Michigan.
