All around the country drug abuse has become an ever growing issue, with more and more people becoming addicted to a harmful substance, and Minnesota is no exception.  drug addiction is spreading throughout the state of Michigan, affecting every resident of Minnesota in some way.  Emotional issues, poverty, and curiosity have turned people on to using illicit drugs.  The primary drug threats in Minnesota include; cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, marijuana, club drugs, and prescription drugs.  With all of these drugs threatening the citizens of Minnesota, the drug addiction problem is only increasing with more people turning to drugs every day.   Approximately 349,000 (8%) of Minnesota citizens (ages 12 or older) reported past month use of an illicit drug. Around 112,000 (2.61%) Minnesota citizens reported illicit drug dependence or abuse within the past year. Approximately 75,000 (1.76%) reported past year illicit drug dependence.  These statistics show that the drug problem in Minnesota is already at a critical point.  If effective drug treatment is not used for the individual abusing drugs in Minnesota, the drug addiction problem will only spread.

In Minnesota, Mexican drug trafficking organizations control a majority of the transportation and distribution of a majority of the cocaine, marijuana, methamphetamine, and heroin.  Many of the proceeds made from this drug trafficking scheme are then transferred back to Mexico.  The presence of street gangs has greatly increased over the past few years.  The African American gangs appear to be the primary distributor of crack cocaine, selling the drug around the major metropolitan areas in Minnesota.    The majority of cocaine found in Minnesota is purchased from sources of supply in California, Chicago and Detroit. Heroin distribution and use are not significant problems in Minnesota. However, recent reports indicate that there has been an increase in heroin use, especially in the Minneapolis and St. Paul area.  

In Minnesota, methamphetamine is either created in small labs or smuggled from Mexican Drug trafficking organizations.  Approximately 54% of the Federally-sentenced defendants in Minnesota had committed drug offenses. Approximately 50% of these drug cases involved methamphetamine.  Marijuana remains the most commonly used and readily available drug in the state.  Club drugs, including MDMA, Ketamine, GHB, GBL, Rohypnol, LSD, PCP, and, to a lesser extent, psilocybin mushrooms, have been reported in Minnesota. Club drugs are most prevalent in Minneapolis' gay population and to a lesser extent, among young people at raves and nightclubs in suburban areas.  With all of these drugs being abuse, it is no wonder why the drug addiction problem in Minnesota is ever increasing.

With the abundant amount of drug abuse in Minnesota, there is a great need for effective drug treatment.  Approximately 100,000 (2.34%) Minnesota citizens reported needing but not receiving treatment for illicit drug use within the past year.  Without drug treatment and education in Minnesota, this drug addiction problem will only get spread and get much worse.
