drug abuse in Oklahoma has become an ever growing problem in today’s society. Emotional issues, poverty, and curiosity have turned people on to using illicit drugs. Drug use in Oklahoma consists of various types of drugs, including; Cocaine, methamphetamines, heroin, marijuana, ecstasy, GHB, and prescription drugs. With all of these drugs threatening the citizens of Oklahoma, the drug addiction problem is only increasing with more people turning to drugs every day. If effective drug treatment is not used for the individual abusing drugs in Oklahoma, the drug addiction problem will only spread.

Any drug that can be found around the United States can also be found in Oklahoma. Oklahoma is also a center point for many of the highways that run all the way through America. Interstate 40 and 44 provides a critical east-west transportation route for drug traffickers. Also, Interstate 35 is a critical north-south transportation route. All of these highways run through Oklahoma, so obviously Oklahoma is a significant target for drug traffickers. Methamphetamine is labeled as the most significant drug threat. It is the primary drug of choice by the Oklahoma drug abusers. A majority of the methamphetamine in Oklahoma is shipped by Mexican drug trafficking organizations. They use motor vehicles, planes, and postal delivery services to get the meth over the US- Mexican border up through Texas and into Oklahoma. Oklahoma has a large amount of open, isolated land which is prime target for meth production. Meth labs can be created in trailers or apartment and are easily hidden. Small “mom and pop” labs are located throughout Oklahoma. There have also been Super Labs found in Oklahoma which are capable of creating 20-40 pounds of meth at a time. The DEA in Oklahoma has become very skilled at spotting and shutting down these meth labs. The authorities in Oklahoma have passed numerous laws, regarding meth and its precursor chemicals, making the punishment much more severe. Cocaine is readily available throughout most of Oklahoma. Crack, has become a significant issue in the urban areas of Oklahoma. Most of the cocaine is shipped through Texas from Mexico. Heroin is available in limited quantities throughout Oklahoma, mainly being found in the urban areas. The Heroin found in Oklahoma is mainly in black tar form, also being shipped up from Mexico. Marijuana is the most abused drug in Oklahoma, being readily available throughout the entire state. Marijuana, trafficked from Mexico, is usually pressed down into brick form and shipped up into Oklahoma. The prevalence of home grown weed has greatly decreased as a result of the droughts, occurring in recent years.

You can see that there is a huge need for drug rehab in Oklahoma and more needs to be done with drug and alcohol education to stop the cycle of addiction from re-occurring in the future.
